Networking in REPE

Does anyone have tips for networking within REPE?

I've been working at a startup REPE shop (+$500MM AUM) in an acquisitions role that invests in a niche asset class based out of a large secondary market. It's been almost two years and I would like to make a move to NY. I got my BS and MS at a large non-target state school. I'm concerned that I'll have a tough time making the move coming from a no name shop and a non target. I would really like to stay within the RE finance industry, but I know how competitive it is. I am dead-set on moving back to NY in the next year or so and will settle for something out of real estate if I need to. I grew up in NY and have a decent network in financial services, but I don't know anyone that works in REPE. Has anyone from a similar background been successful in making a move like this? Any tips for listing deal experience on a CV?
