OK to bring up to boss or better to not say anything?

Hi everyone,

About 2 months ago I joined a successful & active developer who focused specifically on one asset class (which is the asset I want to specialize in and most of my experience is in). However, the week I joined they began looking into launching a new platform to target an asset class that I have zero interest in.

Since then, I have spent about 95% of my time doing work for this new asset class (research, makeshift underwriting, etc.). I have zero experience in this new asset and did not have any interest in it. I left a very good role that specialized in my favorite asset class and only took this new role to gain more experience in that asset. If I had any knowledge the role might be split between another asset and the one I like I would have been much more weary about accepting the role.

I understand it is important to "be a team player" and be willing to work on whatever the firm is doing but it is very frustrating when I left a great role working in the asset I liked because this new company promised great learning in that asset and now am basically ONLY focusing on this new asset class.

Would it make sense to just sit down with my director and basically be real with him about all of this? To ask him if this is going to be the majority of my workload for the extended future or if this is just a short term thing and eventually things will go back to how they were. I would even be fine if the work was somewhat split between the assets but I just do not want all my time spent on the new one I have zero interest in. I have about 5 years of experience so it is not an entry level role.

Any thoughts/input would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Im curious what asset class is this that makes it sound like you hate it so much?

My first job out if college circa 2011 was with a vulture fund that was buying all sort of crazy shit ranging from gas stations to suburbs quality inns and beach town resorts. One of the most thought provoking work and interesting experience to this day. Sucks that in your case its the majority of time spent in an asset class for some reason you hate. I’d recommend keeping an open mind especially if you’re in your 20s but may be share some more info to make it a meaningful discussion?

Complete guess here, but when someone is this passionate about a specific property type I feel like it's typically hotels. Everything else is more or less just a box with tenants

If you want to be that reductive, then so are hotels...

Absolutely say something.  Be diplomatic about it, but if they've essentially changed your job description, you have every right to say something.  Lets put it this way, they'd rather hear you're disaffected with your current work now, and have the opportunity to figure something out, than have you hand in your two weeks right as they put hard money down on a project they're requiring you to quarterback.
