I interned there years ago. It was a good experience. I'm still on the lending side but the switch to principal side is doable - several of my former peers (bank lending) moved to development. Easier to do when you're at the analyst/associate level, but not impossible beyond that. The above comment on pay is accurate based on my experience.

If your ultimate goal is to be in development or PE, then a bank lending gig isn't the "best" starting point per se, but IMO is better than appraisal, consulting, and possibly brokerage (depends leasing vs. investment sales). You'll be working on deals directly (vs. being a 3rd party) and get broad exposure to different property classes.

 

If you're trying to go to the principal side, don't go to a commercial bank. Just wait until you find an acquisitions or asset management role. Or work in brokerage as an analyst program at a large CBRE/JLL/NKF/Eastdil type shop, or actually prospecting for private client listings at a M&M type shop. That way, you see the transaction process and can transition to a client
