Program Finance Comp

I recently joined a small government contractor as a program analyst. I took the role because it seemed a bit more interesting than FP&A. I have the opportunity to work up financials and bids & proposals for several different programs all while determining costs, pricing, and revenue without the pain of accounting work. It seems as I accept more responsibility in the role it could become more interesting and could open up future opportunities at larger firms like Raytheon, Northrop, Lockheed, etc.

It seems that the job is not very demanding outside of month end and busy season but I am concerned about career progression and earning potential. I am somewhat interested in a role that will allow me to interface with customers and earn commission down the line. It seems that program managers and sales managers do relatively well with salary + commission at my company, but it’s hard to gauge - many have little to no background in finance.

If anyone could share their experience/qualifications/pay/career path, it would be greatly appreciated!
