RE Masters - Geographic Location

I’ve recently applied to A&M (MRE) & Wisconsin (MSRE) programs for this Spring.

I wanted to hear peoples opinions on either program. Also I wanted to see peoples opinions on the importance of doing the masters program in the location you want to start your career.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the location of your master's program can significantly impact your networking opportunities and career prospects. It's often easier to build relationships and network within the local market. However, this doesn't mean you can't have a successful career elsewhere. It's about leveraging the program and the skills you gain to your advantage.

As for the A&M (MRE) and Wisconsin (MSRE) programs, both have their own strengths. The Wisconsin MSRE program is highly regarded, especially in the Midwest, and has a strong alumni network. On the other hand, A&M also has a solid reputation in the real estate sector.

Ultimately, your choice should align with your long-term career goals and where you see yourself geographically. If you're in business for yourself, like the Georgetown MPSRE student in the context, the program could serve as a complement to your prior experience and an added tool for your long-term goals.

Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. It's about what works best for you. Good luck with your decision!

I am a very big advocate of going to school where you ultimately want to work, primarily because of networking. It isn't going to take you much time to learn what a cap rate is in grad school. What you should be doing is meeting with as many graduates, guest speakers, etc. from your program as possible and trying to lock down some internships as well. Why spend two years building a network in Madison if you want to end up in Austin when you could instead drive to Austin once a week or once every other week to grab coffee with actual professionals and translate that into an internship and ultimately a job? Similarly, most of your classmates are going to end up around where they went to school, and you're going to want to stay in touch with those people, because they're going to potentially be important to you 20 years down the road when you're all big swinging dicks. You never know who is going to end up a potential debt or equity partner down the road when you're raising money to do your first deal. You will be infinitely better served going to A&M if you want to work in Texas and likewise with Wisconsin and the midwest.
