Real Estate Finance Certificate..waste of money?
First off, not expecting a certificate to be a miracle worker..just trying to get some advanced learning and show some initiative on my resume. Also, the certificate I am looking it, you can transfer credits if you decide to do the Masters or can transfer to possibly another school in area.
Just trying to get an idea of if it's worth it. I am either trying to get in with a bank or get into an AM role with a smaller shop.
Certificates, whether they are from universities or websites, are "worth it" in the sense that you can genuinely learn a lot from them. They are not "worth it" if you are looking for a resume boost.
I think the best answer is "it depends". I know this is unfavorable for a lot of people to hear. But I know people who have gotten Real Estate related certificates and been able to change their career track over to the Development side. I think it is useful for showing interest in a specific subject and show that you have a willingness to learn. It is a nice note on your resume but it doesn't compare to MSRE(D) or MBA/RE concentration.
Been doing some research and Fordhams certificate is a lot cheaper and o be honest, even though there course names are similar I like he description of them more so than those from NYUs diploma..
For example if I went the RE Dev certificate route.. they have a Dev Finance related course where you work on a project and present a construction loan. Since I'm not sure what the hell I want to do whether it's a bank or end up with a developer.. I think it can be best of both worlds. I don't know lol
Also the price is more than half less than NYU
Anyone have any thoughts on the Cornell Commercial Real Estate Certificate? I will be enrolling in a top 20-25 MBA program this fall that does not have a strong real estate program, and I was thinking of complementing my MBA was a Real Estate certificate. Would the combination of an MBA (Finance concentration) plus a Real Estate certificate be helpful to obtain AM role or Real Estate Finance role?
Note: I do not have previous real estate experience
I'm planning on doing the Cornell RE Cert too. I'm still in undergrad (and majored in IT), so I feel this will be very helpful for me to learn more about Real Estate. I can't speak to the career aspect though. You should also look at MIT's program, that's another one I'm considering. Harvard has one as well, but is much longer (2 years) rather than the few weeks these two would take.
