Recruiter asked about my gpa which is really bad
Recruiter I'm talking to asked my gpa which was really bad in undergrad and I already have like 3+ years of experience and interviewing at associate/senior associate positions. There was multiple reasons for this Should I lie, tell him my straight up gpa or say it was not great and explain.
I'd just dodge the question... With 3 YOE your GPA shouldn't matter.
He also asked why I left my first company after a short stint. This and the gpa question were both over email. Should I ignore the email? Perhaps the firm he is recruiting me for care about my gpa.
I noticed over the phone when he asked a lot of questions about my bonus and why I'm wanting to leave.
Tell him to pound sand. You’re not in undergrad anymore.
So don’t even respond to email? Not sure why he needs to know why I had a short stint at my first firm (it was a year two). He’s really well known.
You think he’s asking for the company wanting to know or his own personal. I notice recruiters I’ve talked to are super nosy in this industry and when I talk to them even the one who got me hired at my last firm they try to pry a lot.
Maybe respond with that, if you were in your first role for a year say that. For GPA I would ask why that is necessary 3-4 years in, is the role looking for a minimum undergrad GPA?
He said in the event the company asks me. I can’t even access my transcripts anyways lol I graduated like almost 4 yrs ago or remember my exact gpa.
Would you lie?
Just tell him you'll get your transcript and share it when they ask lol. Tell him you "I have four years of experience and haven't had the need to share that at this point. If they ask I'll get it for you."
You could always make an excuse and say it will take time to get your transcripts and you don't remember and if they ask you'll get them. How bad was your GPA? I had a 2.8-2.9 undergrad and verbally I said 3.0/put that on my resume. I've never had anyone check, one guy in HR wanted to know since I left it off a year after undergrad, another for an internship in my masters program after working 3 years asked me and I verbally said it, no check.
This
I worked with an Ivy-educated, honor's student Director of Acquisitions who couldn't relate to people well at all. To my knowledge, she never actually found a deal, and just helped run the DD checklist/shepherded deals to closing.
I once had an intern with a 3.0 GPA. He had done 4 internships by the time he finished college, was extremely passionate about real estate, and within 3 years has become an independent, respected acquisitions associate who knows his area very well.
I don't put a ton of stock in the GPA stuff. I think that unless it's very, very low, professional experience trumps GPA. I want to work with people who get shit done, and are good with people. I don't need a Rhodes Scholar to run an Excel model.
Willing to bet the company doesn’t care and it’s just the recruiter checking a box they don’t understand. Follow the advice above and focus on what actually matters.
You've got three years of experience. Fuck that guy.
Ask him what his GPA was and where he went and then make it about him to prove a point.
It's unreal that this question is still getting asked for someone with 3 years experience. I'd probably just answer it but I don't know how interested i would be to move forward with them based on a question like that.
