REPE recruiting more reliant on networking with employees or recruiters?

I know REPE recruiting differs from corporate PE

Do recruiters for REPE hold the same weight as they do in traditional PE.  Can networking via cold email/LinkedIn directly with individuals at these firms, be more effective for Megafunds specifically?

Currently at LMM REIB in the process of lateraling to a BB/topMM for REIB, and hoping to leave for the buyside by next summer.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, REPE recruiting tends to differ significantly from traditional PE recruiting. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Recruiters in REPE: While headhunters (HHs) play a role in REPE recruiting, their influence is not as dominant as in traditional PE. For example, in London, most REPE recruiting happens through HHs due to the smaller team sizes and limited hiring needs. However, this may vary by region and firm size.

  2. Networking with Employees: Networking directly with employees at REPE firms can be highly effective, especially for Megafunds. Cold emailing or reaching out via LinkedIn can help establish connections, but it’s crucial to approach this strategically:

    • Keep your emails concise and professional.
    • Focus on building relationships rather than directly asking for jobs.
    • Be mindful of the small size of REPE teams, as aggressive networking can harm your reputation if not done tactfully.
  3. Megafunds Specifics: For Megafunds, networking directly with employees might be more impactful than relying solely on recruiters. However, be aware that in some cases, the person you network with could end up being your interviewer, so avoid asking questions that might give the impression of seeking an unfair advantage.

  4. Key Takeaway: A balanced approach is recommended. Use recruiters to stay informed about opportunities while simultaneously networking with employees to build relationships and gain insights into the firm’s culture and hiring process.

Your current trajectory from LMM REIB to a BB/top MM for REIB is a strong foundation for transitioning to the buyside. Focus on leveraging both networking and recruiter relationships to maximize your chances.
