REPE to Development? Vice Versa?

How can one make the jump from REPE to Development, or vice versa? I've only recently begun to look into development as a career, and it seems like there are some striking differences between the roles of an excel monkey REPE analyst and a boots-on-the-ground development analyst. How does this lateral jump change as your career progresses into higher positions such as at the VP level? Are there any differences as to coming from a well-respected MF REPE (Blackstone) -> Development, or well-respected Developer (Related) -> REPE?
