Resume Boosters
Any helpful advice to make a resume stand out? I am at a loss at this point with my job hunt. I am committed to landing a role in REPE or development. I want to be on the ownership side. I am ARGUS certified, I took a wall street prep RE modeling course, and my experience includes working on a surveillance team at a ratings agency underwriting CMBS loans. Additionally I worked at a small RE investment company where the principal had a portfolio of 250 single family rental units. Deal flow has been non-existent and I need to get a new job. I am willing and able to go anywhere for a career in REPE. Im also older (30) so I have much more life experience than most post grad kids who are "figuring it out". Most of my interviews have gone to "final rounds" meeting with managing directors, principals, CFO's etc but ultimately I haven't gotten a job due to lack of institutional deal experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
OP here -- Even considering a Master's degree from NYU at this point.
Finishing up at NYU feel free to PM me, consider NYU and Columbia.
At the end of the day it's all about experience, just a Master's from there will not help. More than half the program doing unrelated (non RE) or non principal side work (residential brokerage, property management, commercial leasing) hoping to make the jump when that will be very hard since they don't even have internships focusing on that.
All MSREs must have a 2-3 relevant internship component to work. This needs to be an inviolate rule if you decide to attend any one of these programs. MBAs work in part as they come pre-loaded with substantial w/e and internships post-grad. This is the perma-credited advice for all MSRE/Ds whether in RE power centers like NYC (w/ established, well-connected re fin/dev schools like NYU and Columbia) or in Nashville.
I considered that too! Ended up getting into the program a day after applying. I believe it’s free to apply if you use the code they give you during the info session. The courses seemed super useful but I wasn’t planning on working in the NYC area so it didn’t seem of much use. The networking and opportunities seem solid and most people I talked to had jobs right after graduating.
It is just a tough market right now.
If you are making it to final rounds, then that is great, but it sounds like you aren't connecting with people to get you over that last hump. The last interviews arent about skill, they are about fit.
Came here to say this. If you're are making it to final rounds, you're doing better than almost all of your cohorts. If you were applying to every single job under the sun and never even getting to an HR screening, I'd say start evaluating Plans B and C.
Keep your chin up and believe. You'll get there.
Similar situation myself would love to see what people have to say
Just wanted to say that I'm rooting for you and to keep your head up. Only advice I can give is the generic kind: make sure you're using your network somewhere along the application/interview process, if you can... don't just apply through the portals.
You posted 2 months ago you had 2 offers on the table, one in brokerage one in acquisitions, the latter of which is an equity role. What happened with that?
