Advice on resume and where to go from here

Long-time lurker, first-time poster.

I was recently laid off due to the firm I worked for deciding that multifamily was no longer a viable investment option for them. I’m now in my second month of searching for a new role but haven’t been getting the traction I was hoping for.

All of my roles have been very entrepreneurial and on small teams. While I think the upside of this is that I’ve been deeply involved and hands-on with every deal I’ve been a part of, I sometimes worry if this is seen as a limitation. I also started my career thrown into the fire so to say and not on a large institutional team such as JLL/CBRE/C&W.

The majority of my deal experience has been in value-add multifamily. I’ve also underwritten several multifamily development opportunities, though none of those deals materialized.

For context, I have been applying for Acquisitions and Development Associate roles.

My questions are:

  1. Are there any holes in my resume or changes I should make?
  2. If you were the hiring manager what would your thoughts/concerns be?
  3. My career goal has always been to work for a large local developer or institutional player. Am I being unrealistic?
    1. I’m not targeting firms like Blackrock or Hines—I’m realistic enough to know that I don’t have an Ivy League education or a big-name pedigree to break into those.
  4. Should I give up on the dream and switch careers? Or would a MSRE or MSRED serve me well?

Did I inadvertently harm my career trajectory by working at smaller shops/ a middle market brokerage firm rather then starting as an analyst? I’ve always strived to improve by continuing to learn through books, modeling classes, etc., and I’ve been told in the past that I speak well on deals, metrics, and strategy. However, I’m starting to lose confidence.

Thank you so much for anyone who is willing to help.
