Trying to figure out more about the Starwood culture. I assume it’s not perfect given the size of the funds, but was curious if the culture was better than the firms that are not purely RE firms and have trickling effect from their PE/Banker Culture (KKR, BX, Carlyle).
Of course. I can’t guarantee it’ll help the relationship. Best bet, in all seriousness, leave the firm. Not a good place to work long term unless it doesn’t bother you.
Right, I've never heard of any of these institutional shops as having a culture of being yelled at...maybe at a developer centered around a strong personality, e.g. JDS / Shvo / etc (just throwing out an example of a type of shop, don't know anything about those two in particular) but not a PERE 10 type firm
This is before all the IB salary raises, I don’t think anyone knows how these firms will respond to those raises. But being that these are top pe and repe firms I’m sure they will raise their salaries. Especially firms like BX, KKR, and Carlyle seeing as they compete for talent with the banks

My ex-coworker said it’s intense so you need to have thick skin and be comfortable with getting yelled at
They have grown men/women YELLING at other grown men/women over there? They think they’re peoples parents?
Overall, he seems ok with the culture. He’s not getting chewed out regularly or anything. Definitely a demanding role but not unbearable
Unfortunately this happens at more firms than you would know. Not just at Starwood but other firms too. A yelling culture is not a fun place to be.
Are you allowed to yell back 😂??

Is it worse than a culture though where everyone’s a stiff and says shitty things to each other over email (all while maintaining corporate speak)?
Not mutually exclusive--possible to talk crap over email/instant message and have a yelling culture
I guess that’s for you to decide. Everyone is going to feel differently.
TBH surprising to hear that ppl will openly yell at you. Don't think you'll even find that at BX/KKR
Can’t speak for BX, but know the KKR folks and while it’s an intense culture they do have respect for one another and run a professional shop.

What do these shops (Starwood/KKR/BX) pay post banking associates all-in?
180-220 all in
So significantly less than staying as an IB Associate…
175k base at my BB for Associate 1
