Story of Harry Macklowe/Other Developers

I've been reading Zeckendorf's book and recently purchased "The Flatiron" but have also always been curious about how poor developers got their start. Anyone have the background to how Harry Macklowe got started? I couldn't find too much info on wikipedia, also any other recommendations for books that tell developers stories would be appreciated.

Development is about identifying opportunities and the ability to manage a number of people to carry out your vision of how you want the project to turn out. A quick review of Macklowe's Wikipedia page reveals he started out in the brokerage business in NYC. He probably made a bunch of connections that way, learned some stuff, and went off on his own. A lot of developers got their start that way.
