The Progression of modeling

Not entirely sure how to articulate this question... but is there a progression or "levels" to modeling? Like at what point do you move on from a simple pro forma to generate return metrics to more advanced concepts like waterfalls? Are waterfalls with multiple promote structures the most complex modeling there is In REPE ?
