Tips For A Recent Grad With 0 CRE Experience

Looking to gather some information on the best ways to breakthrough into the commercial real estate industry. For some background, I graduated in December 2021 with a BS in Finance with a 3.5 GPA from a non-target. I've interviewed with C&W for a research analyst position in NYC but ultimately missed out after final rounds of interviews. I would like to get into development eventually as an analyst, however at this point I am open to any position that's not property management just to learn about the industry. I am currently a fund accountant for a government agency and I am looking to get out. Resumes on linkedin have yielded 0 results and I've tried reaching out to some people on Linkedin for some tips or just to kind of pick there brains and I've gotten no responses.

If you want to get into development, look up all the development companies in your city and apply there. Market isn’t as hot anymore but last year literally every company was hiring analysts with no experience.

Don’t go the research route if you don’t want to make a career out of it. It sounds like you want to be in production which is acquisitions, asset management, capital markets, investment sales, and development

Easiest place to enter in my opinion is brokerage. It requires the least amount of experience going in and will likely teach you a lot about real estate. You can then use that knowledge and experience to pivot into almost any other role. I would look for an entry level analyst or associate position on a good investment sales team (ideally one with a lot of deal volume). If you can convince them that you are willing to hustle there’s a chance they will higher you without experience. It won’t be easy but it’s more achievable then trying to land an acquisitions or development role. Best of luck on your job hunt. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
