(tishman, hines, related) looking for advice to switch to top lp

Title says it all. I am currently working at (tishman, hines, related) and looking to switch to a top LP repe firm (Bx, SW, Oaktree, Carlyle) as I don't think I want to stay on the GP side long term. Don't get me wrong working as a GP is great and my co-workers love the GP side. It's even great that the firm is vertically integrated but I want to be at an LP focused place. I've learned a lot close to the asset, I just feel that I would be a better fit for the other side. What type of advice would you give to make that switch and is it possible? What lp focused firms would it be easiest to switch too?

yes, it is possible to switch to the LP side. coming from the shops you’d stated above would be an advantage to a capital partner like a blackstone (even though they also do a good deal of direct investing), oaktree, etc. your experience as a sponsor is an advantage to capital partners, as there is usually a mix at shops like those of life-long LP’s and former sponsors.

there are so many LP shops out there that aren’t the big names and also very good. but, if you want to go to the bigger names, and if you worked at one of those shops above, I’d be surprised if you didn’t have a contact at one of them from working on a deal.

I feel like you're being overly paranoid. Most people are too busy to care about gossip and nonsense like that, fully understanding that in this industry, people move between jobs.

I've had a number of "hey man...how do I get to development" talks with junior brokers who have represented me and never once did I think about ratting them out to their superior. That would make me such a whiny little shit.

Likewise, I have reached out many times about the possibilities of openings at certain companies when I know the very person I'm speaking to knows the owners of my company. As long as I'm there for a genuine reason and not trashing my current bosses like an imbecile, what incentive would that person have to go behind my back and rat me out?

This is big boy busuiness. Everyone knows how it works and knows the stakes. You'll wreck your reputation by being a rat far more than you ever would for trying to better yourself with a new job. Hell, if someone ever did rat me out like that, I would go out of my way to wreck their reputation.

I’ve personally done it. people switch all the time. I read somewhere that most people ages 20-34 won’t spend over 2.5 years at a job. so a shop would welcome someone they don’t have to train (and they know they don’t because they’ve worked on a deal with you) so they could get the most work out of you.
