The economist title is very strict now (ie. financial analysts don't qualify anymore). Here's the memo.

I recently got "kicked out" because of it lol. MBB and Big 4 can use the TN easily because management consultants and accountants are eligible jobs under TN. Hope that helps.
Tell us more about the denial? Did you apply to USCIS directly or via border? What was your title and what kind of organization?

Applied at the border. My title was "research analyst" for a CRE firm. I was doing a lot of CRE underwriting.
The officer who denied me argued that "Economists" now have to work strictly on researching the economy. The most common roles are in non-profits and governments.
I'm pretty sure he was simply going off the USCIS website profile for economists when denying me. He even showed my the USCIS webpages that he just printed out. It was pretty funny but frustrating.
Anyhow I've moved on from the whole ordeal.
i see alot of guys in IB that move across the border though...some of my friends do have economist minors however i'm wondering how the rest get across esp the ones that go for a summer internship
Now there is a special visa called the L1 for companies with offices in both countries, which has different requirements than TN. IANAL so do your own research.
How hard is it to go from US to Canada? My girlfriend keeps trying to get us to move to Vancouver but I keep telling her its impossible.
Canada's immigration system is really straight forward compared to the US. There's a points system. How easy or hard to immigrate depends on how many "points" you get.
Moved to States a few years ago, took six months before landing first job. Was in CRE finance at prominent shop in Canada but couldn’t land anything because 1) most US companies didn’t want to deal with visa issues 2) preferred local candidates 3) RE is quite relationship driven so pretty hard to start from scratch, 4) TN categories such as management consulting and economist are the most heavily scrutinized professions. Ended up as landing a job as an Accountant which was kind of a step down but it worked out. Now I have much better and more options since I networked my butt off and have tangible US experience. Once people know you personally it becomes much easier to vouch and refer you to opportunities. In long run I think it paid off as not many Canadians do this. The States is such a bigger pond such that salaries and opportunities are generally better. In hindsight should’ve tried targeting Canadian firms with US operations. I’m still very careful divulging my work status given the current political environment.
