Typical MSRE Internships

Was looking for insight on what those in MSRE programs are getting in terms of internships for summer 2021. I am enrolled in NYU’s program (directly out of undergrad) and still searching. Feel free to share any offers (accepted or rejected).

I was a enrolled a few years ago and can share my internship experience my MSRE. I had absolutely zero experience going-in so was definitely challenging to secure that first placement, but everything started falling into place after that.

Fall/Winter - Yr 1

Acquisitions Intern at a reputable NYC real estate firm (learned the basics of RE finance and was introduced to some simple modelling as I got better at it)

Summer

Summer Associate at a large NYC-based development firm (mainly worked with their asset management team. More exposure from the beginning and tons of site visits/networking, which was a great experience)

Fall/Winter - Yr 2

Off-cycle Intern at a boutique REIB

For someone like me (who didn't have prior experience/network), it was instrumental to network with professors and students in order to secure that first internship. Most of your professors are investment professionals that teach because they like it so chances are they can refer you/help you (or in some cases even hire you) if you have a good connection with them. That's at least my experience!

Now I’m thinking I should have been more active in trying to get an internship during this past semester. It sounds like I’m in a similar position to yours (prior to the experience). Care to share any tips on networking your way into an internship during the academic year? I’ve tried cold-emailing alumni of my program at various shops, but haven’t had a ton of luck. Unfortunately networking with professors/classmates has been made more difficult by everything being on zoom.

Thanks

Pretty brutal for 2021. Cycle for REPE 2022 starts this spring apparently so if you missed the boat last summer/spring you're cooked. I also heard that Hines & Starwood pulled all of their internships, not sure if accurate or not. Blue chip developers haven't even finalized whether they're gonna have internships so it's gonna be a super late cycle. I've got previous experience so I'm able to leverage my old contacts but it's been a pretty rough process for a lot of students so far.
