Entering my senior year at an Ontario business school and want to know if real estate modelling courses are worthwhile for FT recruiting. My aim is to end up on the financial side of the industry with a developer/REIT or in real estate corporate banking.
In the experience of those that have completed the courses, were they worth it? Would they separate me from the competition during the recruiting process?
Wall St Prep came to my school every fall and did the course over a weekend for like $99. It was well worth it for the $99, but don't think it's worth it at all for the full $1.5-2k.
A student club is who brought them to our campus and I know they go to a number of other schools in the US. So you may want to work with a club on campus or potentially your school's career center to see if they can help bring them to campus at a high discount.
I wouldn't go for the full package - just the RE specific modelling course. At $499, do you think it would still be worthwhile?
I learned a lot more from these resources than I did at my MSRE program.

Right now I'm an SA at a good 10 week program and attempting to learn as much as I can in order to get ready for full time interviews (there was no training for my SA internship, it's a boutique) Would the BIWS program be a worthy investment in order to get my technical abilities up to par? And if so, which one should I buy? There's the basic, advanced, and a combination of both.
Right now the only thing keeping me back from pulling the trigger on this is price. If I'm going to spend 350 on an excel course, it better help me, but I'm not quite sure what the package includes since they all seem like they're the same.
I also already have the Wall Street Training modeling course which I'm borrowing from a friend--is the BIWS one that much better to warrant dropping 350 on it?
You won't have time to go through it most likely during your internship but the Excel stuff is fantastic if you're not up to speed.
the guy who makes BIWS even writes somewhere that he doesn't think BIWS is necessary. The guy is chill and extremely honest about his business.
I got it, I liked it, but he was right - I never got much of an edge knowing this stuff, only edge was with boutiques who can't train people. BBs train you and make it clear they just want a kid from a good school, good gpa, who can work professionally - they don't expect you to know everything the first day of work!
plus the guy above is right, if you're really working hard at your SA, you probably don't have much time to do the class.
I'd get it if you think you want it - it might help you, it might not do anything for you. your call.
BIWS is mainly meant for current students trying to get internships. If you're already working as a SA, you might as well just learn on the job. No need to get 3rd party training if you're already in the firm...
I'm mostly worried about the technical questions during the full time interviews especially when I'll be competing against other BB kids who have done their DCF/Merger/LBO modeling. I've been doing only qualitative work during my internship which is why I thought BIWS would be useful. I mean I could go through the models on my own and try to work them out, but I figure that nothing could compare against someone walking me through all the models and explaining the ins and outs plus the potential interview questions.

Hey all,
Wall Street Prep is coming to my school (MBA) for a weekend course. We can take it free for units. it's 2 full days, 1st day LBO modeling, 2nd day advanced financial modeling. It's from early morning to late afternoon, so the whole day.
Now becuase its back to back days on Friday and Sat, I am not sure if I can take both. I will definitely take 1, but I don't think I have have time to take both since I have lots of assignments and projects to do that weekend.
I am wondering about the general usefulness of wall street prep classes, whether its worth it to take them, and also, if I have to take just 1 course, which one should I take?
I am interested in both class. Not exactly sure what I want to do post MBA but targeting both IB and small cap PE.

Yes - I have attended their financial modeling workshops at my MBA program and they were very worthwhile.
If you are targeting IB and PE, you will need to better understand the accounting and financial concepts behind them during interviews. These workshops force you to model and understand the concepts.
if I have to choose between LBO modeling and advanced financial modeling, which one do you think is more useful? Have you taken both?
I have taken the advanced financial modeling and DCF workshops so I cannot speak for the LBO course. What experience do you have with financial modeling? If you can only attend one day -- I would probably attend the advanced financial modeling course because for the LBO session, they will assume you already built your excel model in the previous day's session.
The thing is, the LBO workshop is before the advanced fin modeling workshop....should I just go to the advanced fin modeling one then?
I've taken finance and very basic modeling courses at my MBA...but don't have too much finance experience prior.
If you don't have any experience in modeling, I would definitely go. I was coming from a non-banking background when applying to IB, and I found that putting the Wall Street Prep thing on my resume helped me quite a bit; and it was highlighted by several interviewers.
