Where to learn about the different roles in RE?

I'm currently working in commercial real estate lending at a bank and want to leverage this experience to real estate investing. I'm wondering what type of real estate investing positions are out there and how can I get to that position (MBA? CFA?)

In an ideal position, I see myself doing evaluating whether to purchase a office building in Manhattan or not based on cash flow models, industry trend, market comparable, etc. We might decide to buy and operate or replace management or value adding in some other way.

What positions out there that fits my descriptions? Analyst at a REPE fund? What about REITs and REIF? What about just large real estate operating companies? Acquisition and development seems to be a term that I hear a lot on this forum also.

Thanks and Cheers!
