Work Dilemma
In a bit of a dilemma here. Work at a brand name shop doing mainly AM. The pay is great, hours are good, and most importantly the people are top tier. I’m bored out of my mind though. I’m not sure if I should go on the job hunt and risk ending up at a place I’ll hate or just ride it out here continue making great money and performing well and being extremely bored. Anyone else have this dilemma? If so what did you do?
have you tried drugs...because I think now's the time.
No, stick with this amazing opportunity. I've worked with enough shit folks(assholes not talent) to say if you find good team stick with them. Your goal is to make as much money, have a social life and provide for your family. This economic climate is not the time to jump.
Bruh can you let me know if your office has any openings? Curious to know what product type and what your actual day to day is…
I work on office, industrial and a ton of Multifamily. The place is pretty well known on here, the problem is that it’s only AM, I get no acquisitions exposure even though I’ve worked in acquisitions for two years before coming here.
What's your day-to-day like? Product type? I'm in AM at a smaller shop but wearing a lot of hats so no dull moment to be bored. Interested in how we can both be AM associates but have very different experiences.
Multi, office, and industrial. Feel like there’s just not a lot to do, especially once deals stabilized. We get Property Management sending over requests to spend money and about random issues. We also make the budgets which is boring as hell and we do annual game planning for the assets which is boring as hell. Some dispo work here and there but a lot of mundane tasks
Is there anything specific from your prior acquisitions role that directly benefited you in your current role? Curious how tough AM interviews and process are for people who have portfolio management experience, but no acquisition or development experience, but want to pivot into asset management
feel free to PM if I’m asking too many questions publically
The shop I'm at is similar. Some days, I think that it's a little procedural/dull...but I have work/life balance and good comp. Can't really complain.
So, you have everything you want except intellectual stimulation... why not try doing something small on the side? Buying and managing a small asset (which you should have the chops for given your experience). Or just quietly wait for one of those rare moments where someone offers you a crazy job offer you just can't say no to.
If you are bored, use your time to learn new skills/knowledge. Doesn't even have to be work related. You can make yourself a better person/professional, and maybe in doing so you'll open yourself up to new opportunities that will lessen some of the boredom
Choose adventure my man, will give you new life.
The grass isn't always greener. I was in the same spot as you and just switched firms. I thought the work would be more interesting at the new gig and my work ethic was suffering in the old job because I really had 2-3 hours a day max of actual work. Now here I am working like a dog, not finding the job as interesting as I thought, and most days regret leaving. It all depends on your goals though, my current role will open a lot more doors for what I want to do but man do I miss having the WLB I had and zero to no stress during the work week.
Yeah, and it's also worth noting that the idea that your job should give you a ton of intellectual stimulation is... kind of a Gen Z fantasy. Not everyone can change the world at their job. Sometimes your job is just that, something that pays you and hopefully you don't hate. Find your stimulation outside of the office.
Get some outside of work hobbies and build a more interesting life.
Don't be one of those people that dies at their desk at 80 because they had no hobbies, were bored, and just kept working.
From personal experience, if you’re bored and see no path to transition to another role within your current company that is more enjoyable/stimulating I’d say look elsewhere. My prior job paid more but I wasn’t passionate about the work which lead to me being bored and eventually to underperform. Hard to stay motivated when doing something you don’t have any interest in regardless of the pay imo. I took a slight pay cut with way more upside over time in something I actually enjoy and am passionate about. Plus the plus the people are much better. Since I joined I’ve been performing extremely well and got a promotion less than a year in. Quality of life and level of stress improved as well. That’s obviously my own personal experience so take that with a grain of salt.
I am in the exact same situation as you. In AM at a large firm, great work life balance, great pay, but I'm so bored. My firm is pretty open to internal moves, although there are no openings right now. So, I will probably stick it out for a while and just selectively apply for good external job postings.
Do you guys ever feel jealous of professionals who have tangible productivity goals? I.E., a milk man delivers X bottles per day, an X-Ray tech must photograph X patients per day, a machinist must machine X parts per day...sometimes, our field feels more like smoke and mirrors. I am kind of jealous of those who get the satisfaction of having tangible evidence of their productivity.
