Wrong REPE Career Move - Need Advice Please
Hi all - First time posting, would love some general feedback. For background, I'm 5 years post college. Spent ~1.5 years in brokerage then moved to a well-respected firm (top 50 PERE but not megafund) doing generalist acquisitions for 3 years where I started as an analyst and left as an Associate. Got frustrated with the culture and comp and made decision to join a smaller firm <$1.5bn in AUM that plays in LMM to MM space. I now realize this wasn't the right choice (not a ton of deal flow, skews more LMM than previously believed, ok on capital for now but may not be in future) and now I want to go back to a larger fund. I took a few months off before starting this job and have been working in new role for ~3 months. Will I be able to get back into the institutional world? How long should I stay at this current firm without raising red flags to future employers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Yes. I did it. Quit the LMM firm because they were horrible people and found a job at an institutional developer. You can always come back.
Thank you, could you share profile of where you were pre - LMM firm and for how long?
Insurance company investment division for real estate. 4 years.
start looking now. 3 -6 months it is definitely the companies fault
I think it is pretty hard to judge a company in the current environment, especially if your largest issue is dealflow. Most people aren’t doing a lot of investing today so don’t fault the company too much for that alone.
