Hey Woozy, thanks for replying. I have established a list (though not through Cap IQ) and have begun contacting them with little success.
I do, however, have a possibility of doing a consulting internship for a charity in Switzerland this Summer. Do you think I should take the opportunity, then work my ass off to get a finance-related placement in my 3rd year? I'm back in Toronto by the Summer of that year.
Also, I've been told to leave my GPA off resumes in Europe, even if its in the high 3's. Do you guys have any input on this?
Is that consulting internship assigned to you by the school? If its not, I rather you go and offer to work unpaid at a firm that has more relevance to what you want to do, assuming that money isnt a huge issue (even if it is, I will still work unpaid and try to find other sources of income). At the same time, start reading up on to gain more financial knowledge and try to aim for a finance related internship in your 1st semester of your third year (which is basically the last chance for you to touch up your resume before the resume drop for banks). I will not leave out the GPA as well.
Thanks for the help! The consulting internship is separate from my school. I am enticed by the opportunity, but will continue looking for something more related to finance. I've mostly been applying to the UK because I am not proficient enough at any other language. With that being said, I will consciously look for english placements in other parts of Europe as well.
Just providing some pointers on your CV, to be honest, your CV lacks consistency throughout. I believe that this is important to bankers/consultants, where attention to detail is key, and consistency is more than appreciated.
Other than the inconsistency, I would recommend cutting down on the number of experience and focusing on the quality of the experience. There is too much for me to absorb now. I would also move Start-Up Weekend to the last subsection, under "Achievement" or "Award".
Also for the write up, focus on what you have achieved, and not be so descriptive. "Hired by a group of investors to write a research report on Crocodilian farming in Nicaragua" You can further elaborate it to be share how you go about it and what the report is about. Same with Dalhousie, what events did you organize and what was your role in the team, e.g. "Led a committee of XX members to plan the logistics and manage the finances, resulting $3,500 in saving".
Okay, I shall stop here. Hope you incorporate these in (afterall since you posted in the resume subforum).
