Cover letter critique (engineer to big4 financial modelling related roles)

Hi all,

Location: Aus.

Currently an engineer consultant looking to break into Big 4 financial modelling team (primarily infrastructure advisory) from a technical engineering consulting background (also in infrastructure advisory but with commercial aspects at a multinational engineering firm).

Issue: how do I show I have an interest in finance and that I have a transferable quantitative mindset from my studies/work that can be used in the big 4 role(s) ?

Here is my cover letter:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear KPMG Hiring Manager,

I am interested in applying for the analyst role in the ‘Commercial Advisory and Transactions’ (CAT) team at KPMG. As a civil engineer having also studied finance, I enjoy modelling and articulating numbers into real-world applications. With [STATE]’s infrastructure pipeline and KPMG’s transactional footprint in this sector, I want to assist a team that develops financial outcomes in producing opportunities that will last generations.

Currently I am a graduate consultant in [ENGINEERING CONSULTING COMPANY] within the Infrastructure Advisory team. I have provided operational advice to major infrastructure projects such as the [INFRA. PROJECT A] and [INFRA. PROJECT B] through forecasting of passenger loads, travel times and timetabling. Additionally, I have contributed to the development of business cases, master plans, strategy refreshes and cost benefit analyses through literature review and in organising stakeholder workshops. In these projects, I worked in dynamic joint venture teams to juggle complex cross-disciplinary technical assumptions and ensured there was often sufficient review lead time available. In having received positive client NPS feedback, I wish to use my technical and quantitative foundation in delivering value for our growing contemporary infrastructural requirements.

I have taken initiative to build financial modelling proficiency through coursework and I have an appetite in researching transaction and deal opportunities within the infrastructure sector. Given my experience and aspirations in this field, I would enjoy the opportunity to demonstrate my skills for the CAT team at KPMG. I am eager to hear your response and thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely
