Is it OK that I said my previous internship was “Investment Banking Summer Analyst (M&A)” on my CV?

I worked at a MM/LMM M&A Shop. Official role title was “M&A Analyst Intern”. In essence doing the exact same thing as typical M&A teams at banks but of course it was an advisory firm so by definition not any banking services.

Reason for changing it to IB Summer Analyst on CV was purely to make it well readable from a recruiters standpoint. Would I get screwed during background checks for this?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points to consider:

  1. Accuracy in Titles: It's crucial to be accurate with job titles on your CV. Misrepresenting your role, even slightly, can lead to issues during background checks.

  2. Background Check Process:

    • Third-Party Verification: Most banks use third-party verification companies to check employment details. These companies will verify the information you provided against what your previous employer has on record.
    • Employment Verification: The verification process typically involves confirming job titles, dates of employment, and sometimes job responsibilities.
  3. Potential Risks:

    • Discrepancies: If there is a discrepancy between the title you listed and the official title from your previous employer, it could raise red flags.
    • Consequences: Misrepresentation can lead to being blacklisted from the bank or having your offer rescinded.
  4. Best Practices:

    • Transparency: It's better to be transparent and use the official title, "M&A Analyst Intern," and then explain your responsibilities in the job description section of your CV.
    • Clarification: You can clarify in interviews or cover letters that your role involved similar responsibilities to those of an Investment Banking Summer Analyst.

In summary, while the intention to make your CV more readable is understandable, it's important to avoid any potential misrepresentation. Stick to the official title and provide detailed descriptions of your responsibilities to ensure clarity and avoid issues during background checks.

looks like it was an IB boutique so i think OP is good in the same way Lazard/EVR/PJT summer interns are allowed to call themselves Investment Banking Summer Analysts despite not working for a bank bank (it probably is their official title already though)
