Major GPA on resume

Hey everyone,

I'm currently a student at a non-target school, and I'm in the process of recruiting for 2026 Summer Analyst positions. I have a question regarding how to best present my GPA on my resume. My major GPA is 3.85, but my cumulative GPA is 3.65, really just held down by 2 classes and a couple dual enrollment grades. I’m wondering if I would get grilled in interviews if I only listed my major GPA on my resume.

I've heard different opinions about this, and I want to get some clarity from those of you who have been through the process or have insights from the other side of the table.

1. Would it be okay to list just my major GPA (3.85) if I make it clear that it's my major GPA?

2. Would this raise any red flags in interviews or be perceived negatively by recruiters/hiring managers?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding listing your GPA on your resume:

  1. Listing Major GPA:

    • It is generally acceptable to list your major GPA if it is significantly higher than your cumulative GPA. Make sure to clearly label it as "Major GPA" to avoid any confusion or perception of dishonesty.
  2. Perception by Recruiters:

    • Recruiters and hiring managers may scrutinize your GPA, but if you clearly indicate that it is your major GPA, it should not raise red flags. However, be prepared to explain the discrepancy between your major GPA and cumulative GPA if asked during interviews.

Additional points from the WSO content: - GPA Cutoffs: Many firms have GPA cutoffs (e.g., 3.2 or 3.3) for initial screening. Your cumulative GPA of 3.65 is above these cutoffs, which is positive. - GPA Importance: GPA is often used as a tie-breaker after interviews and tests. It is not the sole factor but can be important in differentiating candidates. - Presentation: If your GPA is below a 3.5, it is recommended to find ways to present it more favorably, such as breaking it out into "Major GPA" or "Post 1st Year GPA."

In summary, listing your major GPA of 3.85 is a good strategy, especially if it is clearly labeled. Be ready to discuss your cumulative GPA and the reasons behind the difference if questioned during interviews.
