Resume Advice

Hello WSO!

Sophomore here wanting to get one last check before sending out applications. Posted earlier but it didn't get much traction, so trying again.

Some info:

I have two on-campus research experiences, but they're not finance related at all—mostly technical work in labs doing machine learning/nuclear energy research. Not sure if they're worth putting down.

I'm also in a finance club that has a training program for new members. Also not sure if/where to put that.

Any critiques welcome, whether on content, formatting, or anything else.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know to refine your resume:

  1. On-Campus Research Experiences:

    • Even though your research experiences are not finance-related, they can still be valuable if framed correctly. Highlight transferable skills such as data analysis, problem-solving, or technical expertise. Use action-oriented verbs and quantify your achievements (e.g., "Developed a machine learning model that improved prediction accuracy by X%").
    • If the research is highly technical and unrelated to finance, consider crafting a narrative that ties it to your interest in finance. For example, mention how the analytical rigor or technical skills gained from these experiences can be applied to financial modeling or investment analysis.
  2. Finance Club:

    • Absolutely include your finance club involvement. If the training program is structured and provides tangible skills (e.g., financial modeling, valuation techniques), list it under "Experience" or "Leadership & Activities."
    • Be specific about what you’ve learned or contributed. For example, "Completed a 10-week training program covering DCF valuation, comparable company analysis, and financial statement modeling."
    • If you’ve taken on any leadership roles or contributed to projects, emphasize those.
  3. Formatting:

    • Ensure your resume is one page, as this is the standard in finance.
    • Use a clean, professional font like Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial, and keep the font size between 10-12 for standard text.
    • Consistency is key: check that all bolding, italicizing, and dashes are uniform. Print your resume to catch any formatting errors.
  4. Content Tips:

    • Write in past tense, even for current roles.
    • Use measurable results wherever possible (e.g., "$, #, %").
    • Tailor your resume to the finance industry. Avoid overly technical jargon from your research unless it’s relevant to the role.
  5. Additional Sections:

    • Include a "Skills & Interests" section to showcase your personality and well-roundedness. Highlight any technical skills (e.g., Excel, Python) and personal interests that make you unique.
  6. GPA:

    • Always include your GPA, even if it’s not stellar. If you’re a technical major, recruiters may be more lenient.
  7. Resume Review:

    • Consider using a professional resume review service like the WSO Resume Help Package for tailored feedback.
