Resume guidance

Hey guys,

I searched around the forum a couple of times for scenarios that would seem relevant to my particular situation, but I didn't really find anything that quite matched, so I wanted to open up a question to determine the best path for me going forward.

I am a rising senior at MIT in an Engineering major and Economics minor. My work experience includes one engineering company, a major Tech company, and my current job in Tech at a BB bank. For leadership, I am captain of my sports team and hold a prominent leadership position in my fraternity.

My only real blemish is that I have a Cum. GPA of 2.9/4.0, with one semester in particular dragging my grades down. Without this semester I would have a 3.14. I would like to get into S&T or IB and I am debating how I should address the GPA issue.

Previously I have simply not listed my GPA on my resume and managed to get interviews through connections with alumni. However, I've read a lot on the forums and from my friends saying I must put my GPA on my resume. My only concern is that I will be immediately tossed out with my GPA, despite my other credentials.

I can explain my GPA in an interview and consider myself good at technical/algoritmic interviews as well as behavioral interviews. How best can I minimize the GPA issue and get some interviews?

Thanks

you're GPA is definitely not good, but you're a STEM major at MIT, so you should be able to overcome this. Just do everything in your power to get it to at least a 3.0, which shouldn't be that hard. Even though the difference is marginal, having a 3.XX is much better than anything starting with a 2. You should be able to get interviews via networking and brand name alone, and if/when the GPA question gets brought up you need to take responsibility for it (don't make excuses/sound whiny), while touching on your strengths (list your SAT, take the GMAT and score well, etc.)

You may also want to list your major GPA if it's higher than your overall. Some firms will become suspicious if you don't list anything at all.
