Value of a BB stint on your resume?

How is an analyst stint at a BB viewed on your resume in the near-mid term? Current analyst at a MM bank (Truist, Stephens, etc) and wanted to pivot into corp dev/strat in tech but haven’t gotten much traction outside of a couple PE portco rollups in non-tech industries.

That being said, I’m thinking about jumping to a BB or higher tier MM bank for another year before making the jump into corporate. The goal would be to focus on a more relevant sector and get offers at some bigger/better companies once I decide to recruit for corp dev again. I’m worried that I might be putting my career on a dead-end path if I go from a lower tier bank to a LMM PE PortCo, but also don’t like banking and not thrilled at the idea of grinding even harder for another year as an analyst.

Am I stupid for considering this as a good option?

Could potentially be material and a good move especially if you’ve had a tough time getting traction at the exits you want. Additionally, can consider the following for what it’s worth.

Some older buyside guy with a lot more wisdom than me made a good point on one of the group rankings posts that I think a lot of people on this forum lose sight of in the echo chamber (e.g., comparing GS vs MS vs JPM groups etc.). He basically said that your career and resume effectively become like a LinkedIn profile over the long-run, almost regardless of what you end up doing: “Joe is a Partner at GHI. Prior to GHI, Joe served as a (insert senior role) at DEF. Joe began his career at ABC.”

Right now what you’re solving for is ABC.

Yes, at the end of the day what ABC is doesn’t matter a whole lot but to some people you may be one day trying to raise money from or network with, being able to say a more well-known or traditionally pedigreed firm may be a bonus point.

So, I think if you’re willing to tough it out and you actually have had trouble getting traction on exits you desire, grabbing that BB brand for your ABC slot may be a wise move.
