Video Game on Resume

Hi all,

I used to be a semi professional gamer back in middle school for a game called Dota and have ranked top 100 in a game called League of Legends which is a relatively big pc game. My question is... do you think it would be beneficial to talk about that experience during an interview? Not sure how bankers would take in that information.

Thanks!

"Competitive gamer" is viewed as resume shorthand for "Will turn up late due to self-inflicted sleep deprivation; chortles and emits spittle while chortling".

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

The general answer would be no. But, really it depends on a couple of factors.

Who are you talking to? If you are speaking with an older person, I wouldn't bring it up (For obvious reasons). If you are talking to someone who is peer level or close to peer level, you may want to test the waters to make the conversation more personal and less about work. If there is a common interest in gaming, the interviewer will remember you and that will give you an edge. Be careful though.

The other factor is what do you look like? This may sound weird, but if you look like a nerd, I wouldn't bring it up unless you are talking to a nerd. Basically, people apply biases (unconsciously) on others, and being a nerd comes with the stereotype that one is antisocial. If you look like a nerd and you talk about gaming that will in their minds, confirm that bias and no one wants to higher someone that is antisocial. However, if you look like an alpha, being a gamer only adds character and makes you look humble.
