work experience - completely empty

Hi, I'm a sophomore and just starting to build my resume.

I've never had a paid job in my life. Thus, the work experience section of my resume is looking bleak. I have, however, volunteered as an office assistant for a physician when I was in HS. Can I include this as work experience (i worked a lot with excel). Also, i've also been volunteering at my college by participating in studies conducted by the graduate business school here. Can I include that in this section as well?

thanks

You probably want to stay away from a WE in HS as a soph in college if that is your most recent and/or only WE. The reason is that this will only draw attention to the fact that you have not worked at all since HS and, for some reason, have chosen to not even intern unpaid since HS (if you couldn't find a paid position). You are much better off focusing on any extra curricular clubs, organizations and activities in your resume. Any types of leadership experiences, semester group projects and so forth will all be more valuable to you. Without work experience, you will definitely need to display some solid club/organization involvement, preferably with some leadership experience. Regarding the studies you've participated in, that depends on what types of studies they were, and what you had to do for them. If they are credible and involvement a decent amount of work, you can definitely include them in your resume. All of that said, you should definitely begin your search to find an internship - paid or unpaid - as long as you can get some valid and recent work experience on your resume ahead of your junior year.
