Would this be misleading on a resume?

Hey guys, looking for help as to whether or not this would be an okay idea.

If you go to a public university that isn't the flagship school within your system, is it disingenuous to put the system on your resume without specifying which campus so long as you still list the location?

For example if I go to University of California Davis, but not Berkeley or LA, would it be okay to simply write "University of California" as my university and "Davis, CA" as the location. It's not technically lying, but usually "University of California" is thought of as Berkeley exclusive.

Same goes for schools like UT El Paso vs. UT Austin, UNC Charlotte vs. UNC Chapel Hill, etc.

I know it's a long-shot, but if you apply to a region that isn't familiar with your system, it could work. For example, I would feel pretty confident with "University of California" on my resume when applying to an Asian or European office.

Let me know, thanks.

I had a kid who cold contacted me for an informational interview do this. It came off as completely disingenuous, and as soon as I figured it out, the interview was more or less over. To make matters worse, the school he was trying to represent was one that I attended, which he could have easily figured out from my firm's website or my LinkedIn.

The lesser schools in those systems are just that, lesser schools, and the educational experience is not the same.

If you are at one of the Cal schools, just use the correct one. They are all at a minimum decent schools. Maybe you can get away with it if you are applying overseas, but I wouldn't recommend trying.

I went to UCLA actually, and I would not want to pretend I went to another school for a million dollars. Have some pride in your education and that will show far more then bluffing.

ps. GO BRUINS !!!

Out the window of my jet... U C LA like a bruin!

Well first off no one calls any UC school just "University of California", so you'd probably just look like an idiot on your resume because it'd look like a typo. 2nd off, if you went to Cal or UCLA, you obviously wouldn't be ashamed to list it, so even if the person realizes that you typed "University of California" on purpose, it's pretty obvious what you're doing. The same applies for any of the other schools (although obviously UNC-Chappel hIll is just called UNC so the first point doesn't apply, but you get my point).

And if you're not in the UC system the difference between the flagship schools and the rest are even worse. Where's that UT-Dallas guy when you need him?
