C in a top school

Freshman here at an elite institution(Harvard Yale Princeton Stanford Wharton) etc. Asian male. Got a C in my freshman year Econ class. Got an A in everything else. Will get As and A+ in every other class this year no doubt. Has internships lined up for this summer and had some last summer. Decent networking skills. How badly will this hurt me.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, a single C in your freshman year, especially in a challenging class at an elite institution, is unlikely to derail your career prospects, particularly if you maintain strong grades moving forward. Elite schools like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and Wharton are known for their rigorous academics, and employers understand that.

Here’s why you shouldn’t worry too much: 1. Context Matters: A single C amidst a strong transcript with As and A+s will likely be seen as an outlier, especially if you demonstrate consistent improvement. 2. Networking and Internships: Your internships and networking skills are critical. These experiences often carry more weight than a single grade, as they show practical application and initiative. 3. Elite School Advantage: Being at a top-tier school already gives you a significant edge. Employers often prioritize the brand of your institution and your overall profile over one grade. 4. Storytelling: If the C ever comes up in interviews, frame it as a learning experience. Highlight how it motivated you to excel in subsequent semesters.

As long as you continue to excel academically, leverage your internships, and network effectively, this C will likely have minimal impact on your future opportunities. Keep pushing forward!

Unfortunately, you're done for. I don't think anyone has ever come back from a C in Econ. You'll never get a job in Finance, Consulting, Tech, etc the only options available to you now are manual labor and fast food worker. Maybe the army if you're ok being a private for the rest of your career. The Army looks down pretty harshly on C's in Econ, no opportunities for advancement at all. Good luck.
