Can an MBA help me get into Investment Banking?

I currently have a operational background that supports sales and trading and I have done this for about 10 years in NY. I am considering going to a top tier business school to get my MBA. Will this help with my chance of getting into investment banking?

Hi naveenn28 as per my idea most of the MBA graduates are choosing to go into investment banking and investment banks are hiring fewer MBA graduates and in turn banks have closed off their markets divisions to MBAs and now mostly hire them only for IBD. Instead, banks are hiring Masters in Finance students or graduates at analyst level and training them up, as per my knowledge most of the banks hire from the world’s top MBA schools, i think your previous background is not a main criteria.

Thanks

You cannot be serious. BBs and EBs hired a ton of MBAs from Stern last year. Check LinkedIn. In fact, it's now a little easier to get IBD from even a 2nd tier MBA unless you're anti-social. The real difficult area to get into is consulting and non-Amazon tech (like Google and Apple)

first phrase is right, but sorry your validity goes down the tubes right after.

banking is good when deals happen in a good market. In shit markets where IPO bond issue M&A are all cash strapped, it won't hire as many.

Haven't heard the dip down low to 2nd tier MBAs yet - there is always more MBA than jobs open at the first tier.

the MS Finance hoax is simply people who can get paid as cheap as undergrad with a master's degree. stickier because their MBA path (if there is one) is longer.

Yes, a top business school will be your only real chance at breaking into IB at this point. Your background is fine, my only concern would be your age. The average number of years of work experience at top bschools is 4-5 years, and the guys who have 10 years usually are military/unique backgrounds.

Also, if you want to do banking I would recommend a full-time MBA program and not a part-time or executive MBA. If you are 100% set on banking, apply to top 15-20 schools and see where you get in.
