Canadian undergrad with L/S equity internship — US MSF/MFin worth it for ER/AM?
Hi all — looking for some honest advice.
I’m an international student at a semi target (but not target major) in Canada. GPA around 3.8–3.9. Work experience so far: 1 top VC in my home country, 2 mid office role at provincial government (data/economic analysis...), and 1 L/S Equities at a Toronto Hedge Fund (AUM $500M - $1B). Also have some stock pitch/trading competition experience.
Long-term goal is fundamental public markets — ideally ER, AM, or buyside research. I’m not really trying to force the IB-PE path unless I have to. I like investing/research more, and lifestyle/personality-wise I don’t think pure IB is the best fit.
My issue is that Canada feels extremely tight for high finance, especially ER/AM/buyside seats. I’m considering applying to strong US MSF/MFin programs, ideally ones with an internship window, to get access to the US recruiting market. I’d probably target ER/AM/investment research first, with IB only as a backup.
I'd really appreciate if someone can share their insights:
- Does a strong US finance master’s materially improve my odds versus trying to recruit directly in Canada through Post Graduate Work Permit?
- For my background, what level of US programs would be realistic targets?
- Is the visa/sponsorship issue still worth taking on given the much larger US market?
- Any programs you’d recommend or avoid for someone focused on fundamental public markets?
Appreciate any honest thoughts, especially from people who recruited for ER/AM/buyside as international students.
