Career Switcher from ER into IB

Hi thanks for checking my questions. I’m working in ER at a BB but want to switch to IB. I’m considering taking on a MBA but not sure if 1) it is a wise decision with current economic climate (although by the time I intern it would be 2022) 2) IBs in London seem to be cutting MBA associate hires, is it still a possible way to switch?

appreciate any advice on this would be great

Why the switch? Just curious. Had a few colleagues who switched over and regretted the decision.

Personally I think it is because I feel like ER can give you a good understanding of the overall industry and companies you cover, but not so much variation everyday. I had been on transaction before and it was quite interesting and also the banking side allows you to get to know more growth companies which Are usually more interesting to look at. Of course downside is longer hours and potentially some face time culture...

An MBA is a great way to make a career change or pivot. I've worked with applicants with ZERO finance experience who used an MBA to get into investment banking. I'm guessing you may be in the UK since you reference LBS. There are a number of top US schools that are looking for students who want to go into investment banking post-MBA. UVA Darden and Kellogg come to mind. In terms of timing, it really depends on what experience you have to date that you will build on during business school. Admissions committees expect admitted applicants to BRING something to the program. Your personal and professional experiences inform your unique perspective that could add value in the classroom and in the broader MBA community.

Good luck!
