Computer Science, Foreign Language, and the Future of Finance?
Hi WSO,
I'm a rising high school senior in MA. I recently attended Bentley University's Wall Street 101 camp where we got to meet with several portfolio managers at companies in Boston. One topic of note from a portfolio manager was that we should all study computer science in college and must learn a language in college as well. He said being behind in these skills would lead us to a lack of competitiveness in the field going forward, and our priority should be in building technical skills versus learning the basics of finance.
I'm wondering from the perspective of others in the finance industry what you think of this. Should the priority in undergrad be to major in CS/math and pick up a language or to study the core principles of finance?
Thanks
Quite honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with a computer science degree, but that's just me. Tech will continue to improve...finance/accounting are pretty much same ol', same ol'
You should have asked him to further elaborate his idea. Programming doesn't mean only knowing the syntax of a programming language. It also means knowing how to use libraries and how and when to implement data structures and algorithms.
