"Convince the school you want to go there"
I've seen this thrown around a lot (Sandy on P&Q seems to say that a lot). Do schools deny people because they are afraid the person wont accept and matriculate there (and hurt their yield)? Other than telling why you fit with the program, what else would prevent that
They absolutely will reject you if you convince them that you will not attend. Even with a 780, McKinsey, URM female profile. Every school wants to improve yield, so Ross won't take a chance with a person who brags about getting into Harvard and saying Ross is my safety.
You need to convince adcoms of your desire to go to that school. That means anything from the program, job placement, location, tight knit community (or opposite city life), etc. needs to be communicated from you that you fit. That is a huge piece of the application that most people miss. I got waitlisted at the lowest rank school I applied to, and I can tell you with almost absolute certainty that that was because I didn't show enough enthusiasm about that school. Your answer is personal to you, but sincerity is the best advice I can give.
