Couldn't join school clubs; how should I improve myself?
Hi, I was rejected from the school academic clubs in university and was wondering how I can gain practical skills and knowledge before summer break. Thanks for any suggestions.

In addition to reading -- Start researching alumni, working on your cold emails, coming up with smart networking questions.
Bad news is that you don't have a club on your resume. Good news is that you don't have to deal with the bullshit and you have the time to get prepared. You need to be disciplined.
