Duke MMS vs LBS MiM

Ive been accepted to both Duke Fuqua MMS and LBS MiM.
Although one can argue which is better, it is a tough one.

My main goal is to work in the US after (as I am an EU citizen, but have the papers for the US) mainly New York. I am looking into mostly US-China related business, FMCG marketing, media and consulting.

So Duke wins hands down in that regard.

But, in terms of job placements and reputable firms, London's location and LBS EU reputation cannot be doubted..

Thanks for any comments

If it's the US, MMS. If it's global--LBS. LBS has a stellar reputation worldwide, esp. in Europe. Look at the employment reports for MIM: You'll see a lot more McK offers vs. Duke's Accenture. Then again, it depends on the students' ambitions and OCR success. Either school is great.

Both offer a practical curriculum and plenty of company visits, etc.

I would take a serious look at LBS. I like the fact that it begins in September. Allows the time to be spent on a summer internship to build your brand and resumer further. Thats the one weakness of the Duke MMS program, the fact that it begins in July prevents that. Honestly, if Duke began in September, I would have taken my offer to Duke.

However, that would be current situation as I didnt want to give up my gig. Agree with Wolfy, US = Duke, EU = LBS.

Did you get any offers from LBS or Duke in terms of scholarships? That would play a factor in my decision considering they both place well.

No, i did not get anything from duke, and have not tried lbs. The problem is that i can work at both places, as i am an eu citizen, but family lives in the us and i have employment authorization there, immigration docs under way.

I study chinese and have internship experience in us-china related business. I will also have a chinese roommate at duke and the duke brand is very well known in china among everyday ppl. However i know that lbs is very strong in thr business world, and is the top international. I just have a gut feeling its not meant to put someone in the us, especially for entry level positions.

Duke has the advantage of new york presence, china connections and us connections. Lbs is great in london, and for consulting finance, and is a business setting every day in the city. Im not sure tho how easy it is to network back to the US.

Companies im interested in are p&g, oliver wyman, bloomberg, deloitte, big4 consulting, big advertising (wpp, omnicom...)...

I've worked in top advertisng/PR (WPP) -- I don't think it matters where you go to school for those gigs. This is after I interviewed the entire leadership of China for a top ad agency for a project. But I do know LBS would be more of a feeder for that in Asia/EU than Duke. Why would you need a MMS if you can work in those firms with a BA and strong networking? One thing to really pay attention is the life lessons, experience you're going to get with a year of postgrad--not just recruiting/studying again for a 2nd shot. To get a WPP job, you could, with your BA, email the president, usually the chief rep, on the website. That's how my, now, friend came to interview in our office.

There are plenty of ops to interview with Bloomberg as well: B-Discovered Day, submitting on the website (3 hour decision sometimes), etc. Sales & Analytics, Financial Developer--these jobs come up all the time.

Duke has a very strong Alumni network, great classes in 10 months, a really tight-knit class, and honestly, it seems like a lot of fun (personal growth, back to school, great learning teams)--which is why I'm considering it. But you got into LBS, and frankly, that's a bar higher in prestige. Both programs will have MBAs be mentors to you. But looking at employment reports and the class statistics, I'd say LBS with its 2:1, 700+ average is a stronger class to employers. You're also in London, and I know that Bain & Co. from Singapore is going there in a few months. There's a strong sister-city tie between London and Singapore, and frankly, you don't want a Chinese salary, even at an Ogilvy & Mather. It pays market. I'm not sure what your financial situation is, but most likely, you're going to pay off school debt. Would you be getting ex-pat pay in China? Most likely not.

I worked in China and networked extensively. Usually it's one sentence, and it's done. Duke would be a tad more familiar to Mandarin ears, but if I was in the know (not just someone who never heard of a Caltech but heard of NYU) -- I'd be impressed by LBS. Then a convo follows, deal's done, etc.

The LBS guys are getting Deutsche, GS, McKinsey offers and in greater numbers than 1. Also LBS lets you do a pre-internship, but usually you'd have to apply R2. It's great you can work in both countries, because firms in the US usually don't bother with sponsorship. And P&G: last time I spoke with the guy who invented the Mach 3 razer blade--US Citizens/permanent residents only. "Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, refugee, asylee or lawful permanent resident." from the website.

For you: Take LBS, aim higher on the companies, and start networking. The advantage for someone like me is, because I am a US citizen, I get FAFSA, financial aid, and I can borrow from the Perkins/FederalDirect/DirectPLUS, etc. LBS for me is straight up cash.

I'd say networking is up to the individual. Your school shouldn't be the end all be all. You'll have top notch degrees either way. BUT if you wanted the most prestigious one, it's LBS.

I'm in the same situation as you.

my gmat was 640, aw 6, undergrad quite international with USC Marshall exchange and 2 BA degrees from Budapest, one a close to 4.0 other not so good.

LBS seems to place very well especially if you're interested in Banking, I think its the only school where Blackstone recruits actively in the UK. For consulting they also place very well but its going to be in other countries thanthe uk if you're not a british citizen.

I think the LBS brand is very well respected world wide by people who know it. Thing is a lot of ppl have never heard of the school du to the fact that its very small. But truly a highly prestigious brand in the business world

Hi guys,

According to your view, it seems like LBS brand is highly pretigious brand in business world, and is a bar higher than Duke in prestige. How about LBS's prestige compared to Columbia Business School and Chicago Booth?

Thanks!!!

Duke for Us, LBS for London. LBS brand is overall better than duke's. But again, if you want to work in the US, LBS's MiM won't help you. Non-Cosigner loan is also available for LBS MiM. Go to Prodigyfinance.com and click get a loan, then select LBS and they will show you the programs they provide loans for. Both will help you break into IB provided that you have some IB experience and network, make contacts, socialize at school, participate in events, graduate with killer gpa, and not just be a hermit. I personally prefer Duke because that's where I'd like to work. But note that if you ever plan on going back to your home country, LBS has stellar reputation around the world and is more well known than Fuqua. So yeah it has that advantage. The rest depends on your location priority.
