Emory Goizueta vs USC marshall undergrad

Got into both directly as a sophomore transfer to the b school, emory for fall 26 transfer and usc for spring 27- transferring from IU

What would you choose, i want to eventually live on the west coast, but also IK NYC is the spot to be for finance roles in general. Want to do consulting/IB still unsure of career path.

Thanks in advance!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown to help you decide between Emory Goizueta and USC Marshall for your undergraduate transfer:

Emory Goizueta

  • Strengths in Finance: Goizueta has solid regional placement in cities like Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh, which are strong for banking roles. However, its reach to NYC is more limited compared to top-tier schools.
  • Transfer Challenges: While you’ve been directly admitted to the business school, it’s worth noting that transfer students often face challenges at Goizueta. Historically, some transfers have struggled with placement into the business school or have had to settle for an economics major, which doesn’t carry the same recruitment weight.
  • Consulting Opportunities: Emory has a strong reputation in consulting, particularly in the Southeast, and its alumni network in this field is notable.

USC Marshall

  • West Coast Advantage: If your long-term goal is to live on the West Coast, USC Marshall is a clear winner. Its alumni network is robust in California, particularly in Los Angeles and San Francisco, which are hubs for consulting and finance roles.
  • NYC Presence: While USC is stronger on the West Coast, it still has a respectable alumni presence in NYC. Networking opportunities are available, but they may not be as extensive as those from East Coast schools.
  • Spring Transfer Timing: Starting in Spring 2027 might delay your ability to fully integrate into the school’s recruiting cycles, which typically begin in the fall. This could be a disadvantage compared to starting at Emory in Fall 2026.

Key Considerations

  1. Career Path: If you’re leaning toward consulting, both schools are strong, but USC offers better access to West Coast firms. For investment banking, Emory might have a slight edge in regional placement, but USC’s network can still get you into NYC roles with effort.
  2. Location Preference: Since you eventually want to live on the West Coast, USC aligns better with your long-term goals.
  3. Recruiting Timeline: Emory’s earlier start (Fall 2026) gives you more time to prepare for internships and recruiting compared to USC’s Spring 2027 start.

Recommendation

If your priority is to establish a career on the West Coast, USC Marshall is the better choice due to its strong regional network and alignment with your long-term goals. However, if you’re more focused on breaking into NYC finance roles immediately after graduation, Emory Goizueta might offer a slight edge in terms of proximity and regional placement.

In my mind they're basically equivalent, but USC is going to place better in LA ofc. Emory would have an edge for NYC and maybe slightly better for IB in general. If the goal is west coast I don't see why you wouldn't go with USC unless you want to live in NYC first.

Yes. very significantly, you would not any benefit of being at USC at that point. All networking and on-campus events happen in the fall. Your best bet at that point is to see if you can take an extra year in college and re-class to be a freshmen that year, then the follwoing semester (your 2nd one and actual junior fall) would become your sophomore fall. This way you get settled into clubs, learn about recruiting.

Honestly probably similar chances of succeeding at either spot, even with Emory it is very difficult to transfer in the fall and recruit immediately. You're not plugged into anything on campus, aren't in any feeder clubs, and just are new. You're trying to make friends, get settled, do networking calls, attend on-campus events, keep GPA up, join clubs, etc etc etc. You may have to even delay grad there a year as well. Yes you may succeed but it's not an easy path anywhere.

Thank you for the helpful response. At Emory, the business school starts during sophomore yr for most students, so I would be joining alongside other sophomores in their first yr at Goizueta. With that being said, you are right about not being plugged in to anything yet on campus and taking a bit to get settled and make friends. This summer, I'll work on learning technicals so I'm best prepared for recruitment next semester.

That makes sense for the USC option.

Tbh this is only down to picking Emory or staying at IU (would throw USC completely out of the picture since it would be too late for IB recruiting to transfer). If your prospects for IU’s “IBW” (or whatever it isv are very promising I would stay. Otherwise go to Emory and make sure your first semester GPA is as close to a 4.00 as possible for recruiting.
