Emory vs Wesleyan vs UCSD vs WashU
I’m a high-school senior and I’ve been accepted to these 4 universities. I hope to enter the investment banking world after graduation. I’m not really considering UCSD and I was wondering how much of a target Wesleyan is. Also, what’s the reputation of Emory and WashU and are they on the same level? Are they considered prestigious?
WashU for sure
Emory has given me a small amount of aid, so WashU will end up being $16K more expensive per year. I was wondering if a WashU degree is actually worth almost $65K more than an Emory degree.
WashU is one of the best schools for financial aid in the country. I’d go back to the financial aid office and let them know your situation and what Emory decided was appropriate for your situation. I’d imagine they’d at least match Emory’s package given their history.
Depends on what you want, if you can get into UCSD comp sci just go there and you’d have a pretty easy time getting into FANG. Making 160+ first year working 40 hour weeks.
I think he said he wants to do investment banking.
Def don’t consider ucsd then lol

WashU and Emory are on the same level for prestige (both recognized as T20/Elite schools). For any interest in banking or finance I would most definitely choose Emory over WashU. You'll get a better finance education, a bit more on campus extracurriculars for finance, better financial center close by (Atlanta), and Emory is starting to pull more a head of WashU in recruiting for IB.
It's close between Emory and WashU, they're ranked the same for Undergrad business. But Emory is in a better city with more opportunities.
Yeah - this is right. Wash U is slightly better of a school, but is literally in the middle of nowhere. You can easily do good networking and internships at Emory in Atlanta in PE and IB (Suntrust, etc.) before going to a full time gig in NYC or wherever else. Much more optionality for a similar caliber school, based primarily on location
UCSD if you wanna go bonkers on the weekend.
Emory grad here (bias stated upfront). I think the clear cut decision as iterated above is Emory vs WashU. Wesleyan, while a good school for well rounded education, simply isn’t recognized in IB. I bet they send a few kids per year, but banks are looking towards Williams/Amherst for Lib Arts kids. Education wise, maybe it’s the same, but you’re looking to break into high finance so throw Wes out. Emory vs WashU: can’t really go wrong. Both are arguably equivalent and same type of school. Atlanta offers strong back up opportunities for MM or non IB/PE/AM/HF Finance Jobs if you ultimately can’t or don’t want to break into high finance. Both D3 (equivalent college experience / party culture / sports).
Coming down to ROI, if you’re unable to get aid from WashU, Emory is a clear cut choice. Underclassmen at either school will fight tooth and nail to claim which school is superior to one another, but the reality is they’re equal. Marginal difference if any and arguments can be made for both. Therefore, it simply isn’t worth paying $60k extra for WashU ($15k/yr more). Even if you’re upper/upper middle class, the ROI is important. Your parents worked hard for that $$$. Don’t make them pay an extra $60k for a school that is completely unnecessary and won’t give you any different opportunities than the opportunity cost.
Why do you want to do IB? More important than the professional considerations, IMO, are that you could actually see yourself enjoying / succeeding at whichever school you pick
Emory and WashU both are good choices and currently have pretty good placement on the street - this is the whole splitting hairs bs this site does on stupid banking Tier lists.
another factor is how happy you’ll be and if it’s the right atmosphere for you the thrive. Both Emory and WashU have undergrad B Schools which make grades a joke, but you probably wanna visit the campuses to get the vibe, too, as it relates to things you would wanna be involved in on campus.
