F b-school, check d-school?

I was just wondering what people on here thought about Stanford's new Design School when compared with other business schools. Do you think it will be a competitive substitute for b-school?

It will not help you in terms of recruiting. You have to be nuts to think a degree from a design school would replace or be a remote equivalent to an MBA.

I am a major proponent of design thinking, however. Stanford does have a massive appeal, in my opinion, since anyone in any other school at Stanford may enroll in courses at the d-school. Going to the GSB would let you take d-school classes, and in terms of value for your career, that might end up being massive. For recruiting, however, no real value at all.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

I like the concepts, but I don't think it will ever gain the traction that the MBA has. The MBA is a well known degree with distinct benefits for those who go to top schools - network, brand, etc. However, I am willing to bet that MBA programs will start incorporating these concepts into electives if not the core curriculum.

I took a few classes at the d school some time ago. I don't have subscription at WSJ so couldn't read the article, but i don't understand why anyone would compare the d school to MBA programs...

The "design thinking" is definitely an interesting perspective / theory, and perhaps one that can be applied to corporations with positive impact. However, the d school does not seek to train future corporate leaders and managers at all... they are very much focused on products and how to revolutionize the designing aspect. All of the d school corporate sponsors I've seen are engineering / technology powerhouses, not banks and consulting firms.
