From ER to MBA?
I was just wondering if people in ER/AM consider doing the MBA or do they stick with the CFA?
Also given the focus on leadership skills, how do ER analysts stack up against IB or other entrepreneurs when it comes to Bschool admissions?
(I know the question is very general but I am curious how Research Analysts are looked at by Adcoms)
I've worked with a bunch of research types (not always equity research -- there are other asset classes :-) who have gone on to business school because they are interested in expanding their world, learning leadership skills, and, for those who want to stay in the business, upgrading their skill set to position themselves for a higher-caliber job.
If you ask anyone who is currently between years at b-school, you will hear that there are students from all those areas you mention: investment banking, start-ups, consulting firms, big and small tech firms, you name it. So it isn't a question about how you stack up against them, but how you compliment their experience in and out of the classroom.
Admissions people look often at how you influence your own organization -- not only whether you have been promoted fast (doesn't hurt) but if you are the one who comes up with good ideas and who works and plays well with others. It's more about your character, self-awareness and decision-making ability, not how many deals you've done, so don't worry.
Not sure if you are asking whether you should do the CFA or the MBA --- that's a different question and has been discussed here on WSO many times and should be easily through a search. But if you are asking do research analysts go on to business school and succeed? The answer is yes.
