gift for a new MBA student
My best friend got married a month ago and is starting his MBA program in the summer. I would like to inquire what what is your opinion on the better gift? An android tablet (like the Galaxy Note or Asus Transformer) or something else like a color laser printer (full duplex/wifi) or any other suggestion. I would like to give a practical gift, the tablet as much as I can gather is starting to appear in some of the b-school curriculum. The iPad I am ambivalent about as it is not expandable and has no usb port.
Sweaters, T-shirts, and other swag from the school he will be attending. Can usually get it online from the school shop.
He is attending the same school he got his undergraduate degree from so he has plenty of swag as it is. I was looking for something more meaningful and useful aside from a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue. Something practical and under $500.

If it was me, I'd take cash. You can print for free at school, so not really useful once the ink runs out. iPad/Tablet will be nice to have, but not necessary. You can chip in for half his laptop or something if he is getting something new.
Printing is not totally free at this university, I believe they outsourced it Xerox or some office machine company that charges .08 per sheet after your first 25 prints that is provided by the SGA.
A $200,000 check might be nice.
But seriously, maybe a laptop. Or a laser jet printer.
All of these previous answers sound like some UG bullshit. I am assuming you are a grown man, since your friend is getting married and getting his MBA, so 1. make sure you already got them (him+bride) something off of their wedding registry. 2. Get him whatever you want for the MBA gift, booze, personalized booze, or even a cheesy coffee mug with an inside joke. Making sure the wedding gift is solid is priority #1. Keep the wife impressed with you and she won't give you trouble.
If you are trying to "bundle" his wedding present with him starting his MBA, that is cheap. Might as well buy him a Kindle...
You've made some assumptions there. I asked a direct question and left out extraneous stuff that I felt had little to do with my inquiry. This will be the third and final part of my wedding gift as I have already given her a personal present and them as a couple a present they both can use and I now want to have this one focused for him. So I am asking those who of you who are currently in a MBA program or those that just graduated for some relevant advice.
The only difference between a gift and charity is practicality. (and tax deductions)

Tablet is a good idea. A lot of people think they won't use a tablet that often when they get it but are surprised at the utility of it. Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini are good cheap options -- maybe the best in an academic setting because of how portable they are.
