GPA for MBA Admissions: undergrad vs. graduate (law) school
My grades in law school were significantly lower than my GPA in undergrad. This is because in Canada the model is different for grading in law school. The #1 student in my law class had a 3.7 GPA (A-). Out of 200 students only 5 or so get an A- average. I had a low average like a B/B+, whereas in my undergrad I had a >3.9 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
If I nail the GMAT (my diagnostic score was a 660, completely cold, so I'd imagine I can get deep into the 700s seeing as I haven't looked at a math problem for 5 years), I am just wondering if my sub-par law GPA will hold me back, or will it be MOSTLY or SOLELY based on my undergrad GPA?
If it is my undergrad GPA, then I will be in a great position.
Depends on the school, you did not specify if you want to do an MBA in Canada (like Rotman or Ivey) or in the States. If you are going to the states, chances are they are going to look at your law school grades and recruit accordingly. If you stay in Canada, then your average in law school isn't too bad and you certainly won't be out of the running - infact showing that you went through law school will only speak to your academic abilities. My $0.02 is that you destroy the GMAT, and take it from there. You can't control you GPA anymore anyway so why worry about it? Also, 660 raw score is excellent, try to hit 720+. Best of luck!
