Grad School UK->US

Just finished my final year undergrad exams, have an offer for a 2025 summer in the UK (told them I'd do a master's after). Most of the programs I'm applying to are in the US though. Would it at all be possible for me to do the internship at a US office instead, or will they just force me to stay in the UK? Would I have to do a UK master's even if I get a better offer from the US?

Thanks pls help

Based on the WSO threads discussing international internships and transfers, here are some insights that might help you navigate your situation:

  1. Internship Location Swap: Generally, switching the location of an internship from one country to another (e.g., from the UK to the US) is quite challenging due to different hiring needs, visa requirements, and internal policies of the firm. However, it's not impossible. You should directly communicate with the HR department or the hiring manager of the firm where you have the offer. Explain your situation and express your interest in transferring your internship to a US office. They are the best source to give you a definitive answer based on the company's policy.

  2. Studying in the US vs. the UK: Accepting a master's program in the US over the UK should not inherently force you to decline your UK internship offer, unless the internship explicitly requires you to be enrolled in a UK institution. Again, this is something to clarify with the firm's HR as policies can vary widely.

  3. Visa and Work Authorization: If you do manage to transfer your internship to the US, ensure that you have the necessary work authorization. Internships in the US typically require specific visas (like J-1 or H-1B) that need to be arranged well in advance.

  4. Long-term Career Goals: Consider how each scenario aligns with your long-term career goals. If your ultimate aim is to work in the US, gaining experience and networking in the US through an internship could be beneficial.

In summary, while there are challenges to what you're proposing, with proactive communication and a clear understanding of visa requirements, you might be able to align your internship with your academic and professional goals. Always keep open lines of communication with both your potential academic institutions and your employer to navigate this smoothly.
