How Far Can You Stretch The "Legacy" Title?
My father got his MBA at a local university when he was younger, but over the years has since recieved his CEBS designation and a handful of other "certificates" from Wharton through their various Executive Education programs.
Is it worth trying to say I'm a legacy when I apply or will the admissions person just shake their head at me for trying? For those of you who have applied to Wharton's MBA program, if you remember how the legacy question is asked on the application that would be perfect.
Sure, take a shot, but if possible I'd qualify it with the degree your dad got since in my mind certification doesn't equal legacy.
I don't think its that helpful - even if your dad had gotten his MBA there. My perception is that most of the top schools HBS, Wharton, Columbia, etc don't care that much about legacy, if they ask its more of a tracking tool internally. The only exceptions would be schools like Tuck, where they place a lot of emphasis on fit and they would assume you "get it" more if you had family that went.
Of course everything goes out the window if your dad is giving major $$$.
^^agree. Unless your dad is a major (and by major I mean millions) donor as an alumni, legacy means next to nothing

legacy doesn't mean much at the grad level. It's more relevant at the undergrad level.
On a related note, anyone know if you have to graduate from a school for your kids to get legacy status, or is attending for a couple years enough? Anyone remember how Harvard words it on their undergrad app?
bump.
