How good is HKU

Hi, I am planning to study in HKU next year but I have some concerns. How prestigious is HKU, is it comperable to schools in continental europe such as bocconi, or UK semi targets, in other words is it well-known outside Asia? Another one is employability aspects; can I work in London or UAE after graduation? Last one is ratio of international students, is it easy for international students to make friend? Thanks for your answers in advance

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Prestige of HKU:

    • HKU is a well-regarded institution in Asia, but its recognition outside of Asia, particularly in Europe, may not be as strong as some of the top European schools like Bocconi or UK semi-targets.
    • In Asia, HKU holds a strong reputation, but for global recognition, especially in finance, schools like LBS, INSEAD, and top UK universities (Oxbridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL) tend to have a more established brand.
  2. Employability in London or UAE:

    • While HKU has a good reputation in Asia, its alumni network and brand recognition in London or the UAE might not be as strong as those from top European or UK schools.
    • For better employability in these regions, attending a school with a strong global brand and alumni network, such as LBS, INSEAD, or top UK targets, might provide more opportunities.
  3. International Student Experience:

    • The context provided does not specifically address the ratio of international students at HKU or the ease of making friends as an international student.
    • Generally, top universities tend to have diverse student bodies and support systems to help international students integrate and make friends.

I'm in UK target and I can say that HKU is not as prestigous as the UK targets but better than the semi targets, I would say it is somewhat comparable to warwick~King's, as biz sch and certain programs are very well regarded but the others are quite mediocre

And if you speak fluent madarin HK might be easier to break in, ive seen less competent friends(I'm from East Asia) in HKU walking into the high finance wheareas my friends in LSE are struggling as london is a shitshow right now

However it is getting harder and harder to get a FO job as a HKU graduate due to the growing influence of mainland china, Peking/Tsinghua are the real targets in HK

And HKU graduates are eligible for both UK High potential individual visa and Dubai Golden visa so the uni opens up some opportunities in those regions. You can work in London or UAE. However nowdays both London and UAE are VERY saturated from graduates from top unis and even my friends in Oxbridge are struggling, that's how hard it is right now. So you have to plan strategically and leverage your strength wisely in order to increase your chances.

And securing an internship is Infinitely easier in HK, In UK the target school means nothing, you will lose to DEI/social mobility/Nepo candidates from the non-targets. They care less even if you go to LSE. Whereas for HKU students, getting an internship is a breeze.

HKU isn't really rated in UK/UAE if you want to work there. More due to most people not really being aware of the Asian target system. In Asia it's one of the top few as you know.
