Getting into McCombs at UT Austin, especially as an out-of-state (OOS) applicant, is highly competitive. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable tips:

  1. Academic Excellence: McCombs is known for being extremely selective. Aim for top-tier grades (4.0 GPA or close) and standardized test scores (SAT/ACT in the 95th percentile or higher). Rigorous coursework, such as AP/IB classes, is a must.

  2. Standout Extracurriculars: Beyond grades, McCombs values leadership and initiative. Focus on activities that demonstrate your ability to lead, innovate, and make an impact. Examples include starting a business, leading a finance/investment club, or excelling in DECA or FBLA competitions.

  3. Unique Personal Story: Admissions committees appreciate applicants with a compelling narrative. Highlight unique experiences, challenges, or achievements that set you apart. For instance, if you’ve done something entrepreneurial, spearheaded a community project, or excelled in a niche area, make it a focal point.

  4. Demonstrated Interest in Business: Show a clear passion for business and finance. Internships, summer programs, or certifications (like Wall Street Prep or financial modeling courses) can help bolster your application.

  5. Strong Essays and Recommendations: Your essays should reflect your goals, passion for business, and why McCombs is the perfect fit for you. Recommendations should come from people who can vouch for your leadership, work ethic, and character.

  6. Networking and Alumni Connections: If possible, connect with McCombs alumni or current students. Their insights can help you tailor your application and potentially provide a referral.

For other top undergraduate business schools like Marshall (USC) and Ross (Michigan), the strategies are similar: - Marshall: Highlight creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. USC values well-rounded students with diverse talents. - Ross: Focus on analytical skills and teamwork. Ross appreciates applicants who can demonstrate problem-solving abilities and a collaborative mindset.

Remember, for McCombs specifically, the competition is fierce, especially for OOS applicants. The school’s reputation for IB placements and its rigorous program make it a top choice, so ensure every aspect of your application is polished and intentional.

McCombs admissions are very weird and, in my opinion, extremely inconsistent.

OOS admissions is highly competitive because 75% of admitted students must be from Texas per state law. This doesn’t necessarily mean that 25% are OOS and international.

Involvement in some business extracurricular really helps from what I’ve seen - incorporating your experiences from this club in your essays should make your profile more competitive for business.

You need a high GPA/class rank and good standardized test scores obviously.

Best of luck. McCombs is really a great school and I’ve benefitted greatly from its programs and alumni base.
